Chardonnay picking starts Sunday

Happy Grape-Pickers!

Happy Grape-Pickers!

Harvest season is almost here!  This year we netted for birds & trapped 4 raccoons (and one bobcat by accident) and so we actually have some grapes to pick.

Time:  7:30 AM – until finished (okay, whenever you roll out of bed, but I’LL be out there early BEFORE it gets too hot)

Date:  Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Location:  21724 Hill Road, Salado, just take I-35 exit 279, half mile up the hill from interstate

Bring:  Sunscreen, bug spray, big hat, pruners (optional-we’ve got plenty to lend).

Dress comfortably.  I recommend shoes and socks because I always manage to stand on an ant mound and don’t notice until it’s too late.  It’s kind of late for chiggers and should be too dry for mosquitoes, but you might want bug spray.

Watch out for bees, spiders, mockingbirds, ants.  This year I haven’t seen a single snake in the vineyard, so no worries. 😉

Hope you can make it, if not we’ll have a few more chances in a week or two!

New Wine Premieres at Taste of Salado, August 4th

Red Caboose Winery Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot
Red Caboose Winery Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot

Have you bought your tickets to the first ever “Progressive Taste of Salado”?

Because you don’t want to miss out…

For the first time ever, we will be offering this wine, grown in Salado and made by Red Caboose Winery.  This Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend will be poured by the kind folks at The Range Restaurant.  The chef, Dave Hermann will pair it with Ancho-Espresso Rubbed and Smoked Filet of Beef over Smoked Cheddar Mashed, Grilled Veggies.

This wine will be available for sale for $32.95, starting the night of the Progressive Taste of Salado, August 4th, 2009 at Salado Wine Seller.  The grapes for this wine were grown in 2007 and there is only a limited amount available, so don’t miss the premiere.  The grapes from 2008 were blended in a large batch and so it may be 2 years before we have anything this special again!

To purchase tickets, call (214) 293-4579 or click on Progressive Taste of Salado.

Art Exhibit by Hershall Seals June 2009

Hershall Seals Paintings on View at The Wine Seller, Salado, Texas

dona-nobis-pacem

dona-nobis-pacem

Paintings by Belton artist Hershall Seals will be on view during June, 2009 at the Wine Seller located at 841 N. Main St. in Salado. Hours are 12 noon – 6p.m. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 12 noon-7p.m. on Friday & Saturday. A reception will be held on Friday June 5th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Hershall grew up in South Texas and has kept his sense of belonging to the land integral to his art and remains motivated by the landscape and the original inhabitants of the land. Ancient pictographs and petroglyphs from the Southwest have inspired his directions in a variety of art forms such as jewelry, glass blowing, printmaking, assemblage art, and painting.

He says about his art, “I am borrowing some of these symbols from other culture groups as has been the extensive practice throughout art history. While not imitating or alluding solely to native American spirituality, my images use an old visual language combined with contemporary materials and methods to suggest concepts of transcendence, power, and the supernatural.”

Hershall has taught art at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor since 1987. He earned the BFA degree in Art Education from Sam Houston State in 1978 and the MFA in Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University in 1983. He served as the Visual Arts Co-Director at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple for four years prior to teaching at UMHB.
