Texas Highways

We’re mentioned on page 10 by reporter Nola McKey.  She stopped by to check out the chicken paintings by Lonnie Edwards.  Her article “Surprising Salado” details many of the Salado artists that she met on a recent weekend trip to Salado.  The online version is at http://www.texashighways.com/index.php/component/content/article/37-departments/6038-postcards-surprising-salado

From the article, “Surprising Salado”, Texas Highways, December 2009:

“…I headed to the Salado Wine Seller to see some of the chicken paintings–colorful assemblies of lines, swirls, and dots–for myself.  Owner June Ritterbusch not only sells Texas wines and offers wine tastings in the two-story, cedar-clad building, but she also displays works by local artists, many of them in the contemporary vein…”

Salado Wine Seller in Texas Monthly

In the December 2009 issue of Texas Monthly, Jordan Breal recommends folks “Veer off I-35 to explore this lively stretch of boutiques, bistros, and gift shops galore“.  We’re listed us as one of 8 businesses in Salado on Main Street to visit.  Check it out at http://www.texasmonthly.com/2009-12-01/streetsmarts.php

Celebrity Bartender Night, Thursday October 29

Our first celebrity for “Celebrity Bartender Night” was a clown!  Grainger Esch and Tony Blackman came by to serve customers their wine and entertain them a bit.

stop clowning & pour the wine!
stop clowning & pour the wine!

This gave us a great chance to remind everyone about the current performance at Salado Silver Spur Theater

Fans of playwright John Van Druten’s “Bell, Book and Candle” get an entertainment bonus when they see the enchantingly funny, romantic comedy at the Salado Silver Spur Theater (108 Royal St., Downtown), weekends through Nov. 6:  Dancer Michelle Stuckey of Austin.Director KD Sperling of Round Rock, has brought the script’s oft-mentioned  “Zodiac Club” — a gathering place for witches and warlocks — to life by featuring a spell-binding and mystifying, if not magical, dance number by Stuckey.
The attractive dancer, who trained and competed in gymnastics under the legendary Bela Karolyi, began dance lessons at age 15 and competed with Broadway Performance Academy ’s (BPA) first Senior Elite Company. She performed with BPA in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Harley Davidson Fashion show, and Encore Nationals in Las Vegas .

Now finishing her BFA in Dance at the University of Texas, Stuckey also has performed at Zachary Scott Theater (Austin)  in “Jesus Christ Superstar” and the Zach’s 75th Anniversary Gala Concert.”  In spring 2008, Stuckey performed at “The Long Center (Austin) Opening Gala.” She also has a featured role for Director Terrence Mallick’s Tree Of Life, starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The film is set to release this Christmas.

Weekend show times are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Evening shows are $15 for adults; $12 for senior citizens, military personnel and students with ID; and $8 for children aged 12 and under. For matinees, admission is $10, $8 and $8, respectively. Group rates also are available. For reservations, call the Silver Spur box office at 254-947-3456. For more info or directions, visit http://www.saladosilverspurtheater.com/.

The play, set in the 1940s and popular for decades, revolves around the life of a pretty New York City witch, Gillian Holroyd. Her world is turned upside-down when she casts a love spell on her handsome neighbor, a publisher. Meanwhile, her nefarious brother and eccentric aunt practice their own spells, knowing that true love typically terminates a witch’s powers.

The ensemble cast also features newcomer Paige Newman of Waco as the sultry witch Gillian and Karen Ewton and Mary Bentley, both Saladoans, alternating as her” Aunt Queenie, a comical witch-in-training. Spur Technical Director Tony Blackman is the mischievous prankster brother Nicky Holroyd.

Tom Rolls is the handsome apartment neighbor Shepherd Henderson, “smitten” and mesmerized by his apartment manager Gillian. Newcomer Kevin Reid is author Sydney Redlitch who serves up a lively turn as the less-than-taciturn expert on witchcraft.

Beloved Dog inspires show at Silver Spur Theater

SALADO – Grainger Esch has always loved dogs – so much that he wanted to put his own Fox Terrier-Chihuahua mix, Sanchez, in a canine variety show at the Salado Silver Spur Theater. But just a couple of months ago, Sanchez died after being hit by a car, and Esch lost his star performer.

“He would have stolen the show,” said Esch, the theater’s executive director. “I’m convinced of that.”

The Salado Silver Spur Theater will carry on with its new variety show “Gone to the Dogs” at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, beginning this weekend through Sept. 26. Proceeds benefit area animal shelters. Before each show, the Salado Humane Society, Forgotten Friends Rescue of Leander and the Bell Area Animal Shelter will have dogs and cats available for adoption.

The theater continues its tradition of vaudeville-style shows that combine different sketches, slapstick comedy and performances, usually including a comical crisis where everyone scrambles to keep the show going.

“It’s kind of like the Muppet Show, although we’re not puppets,” Esch said.

The five-week show won’t feature actual dog performers, unless you count the “invisible dog.”

“He’s real, he’s just invisible,” performer Tom Rolls said. “I’ve seen him.”

Rolls will introduce a new character Soapy Stillwater, an old janitor who worked at the 1950s Guest and Sanford Ganary before it became the Silver Spur Theater.

“Thirty years later, they find him sleeping in the back,” Rolls said. “It’s always fun to have a janitor-type character in the show.”

Different guests will perform each night, and this weekend features singer-songwriter Richard Paul Thomas. On screen, the show features vintage cartoons and Charlie Chaplin’s silent film “A Dog’s Life” with live piano accompaniment and sound effects.

Tony Blackman, technical director and performer, said that although the theater is known for its old-fashioned variety acts, it has ventured into something new with “Gone to the Dogs.”

“We’ve never done anything quite like this,” he said.

Each weekend, performers will dedicate the show to a different animal shelter and bring homeless dogs on stage, introducing them to the audience for adoption.

“Hopefully, we can find a home for the fellas,” Esch said.

He said the show offers lighted-hearted themes for all ages. Children love the slapstick, and adults enjoy the jokes.

“It’s harkening back to a simpler time,” he said. “There’s not a heavy message to these shows other than to have fun and laugh a lot.”
