TX Winery Passport is Here!

Passport to TX WineThe Texas Wine and Grape Growers Board of Directors proudly announces the launch of the TX Wine Passport Smartphone Mobile App, a tool to promote the Texas wine and grape industry and drive consumers into Texas wineries.

The TX Wine Passport Mobile App is a project started two years ago to when marketing funds were lost. The TWGGA Foundation, along with 38 Texas wineries who are TX Wine Passport launch partners, believes the mobile app is the best marketing and tourism program available. The development of the mobile app was managed by BarZ Adventures in Austin, TX.

There are several mobile apps that have been developed touting wine regions, wine trails, passport programs, and other wine-related venues. All of the mobile apps require a participant fee. What makes the TX Wine Passport Mobile App unique? It is the only mobile app whose sole purpose is to market only the Texas Wine and Grape Industry and provide funding for Viticulture and Enology scholarships.

The Texas Wine and Grape Growers Foundation, Inc. is devoted to the improvement, growth, and prosperity of the Texas wine and grape industry. The Foundation generates funds for marketing, promotion, research, and education programs.

Participation in the TX Wine Passport Mobile App is open to all Texas wineries who are TWGGA members.

Stop by for Punch Down

sangiovese to the left and merlot to the right

sangiovese to the left and merlot to the right

I think this is the best time of year at the winery–FERMENTATION!  Every few hours we punch down the cap to mix up the wine and ensure that the yeast gets access to all the good bits of grapes.    It’s a great workout for my arms, shoulders, & back, but I’m happy to “share” the fun!  Come on by and I’ll let you stir too 🙂

We have over 200 gallons of sangiovese, malbec and merlot must fermenting.  We’ll be pressing in several days when fermentation is complete. The merlot is giving off a great purple color, but the sangiovese is much lighter.  I’m sure we’ll make a rose with the sangiovese again.  The cabernet sauvignon is still on the vine.  We double-netted it to keep the mockingbirds out.  Hopefully the nets will work and then we’ll marry the merlot with the cabernet.

Hoping for great wine and now it’s time to punch again…

Please Pull the Plug on HB 2537

how about this wire Mommy?

Mommy, don’t let those state senators ruin our business!

Call to Action!

As previously reported, the Board of Directors of the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association is opposed to HB 2537 as it was substituted and passed out of the Senate Business and Commerce Committee for the following reasons:

It protects segments of the industry from competition rather than regulating a public health, safety or welfare issue.
It hinders revenue and growth avenues for Texas wineries.
It places undue reporting and administrative burden on small business.
It harms existing businesses that are operating within the current laws.
It sets a bad precedent of restricting rights of growing businesses.

This bill is scheduled to be on the senate intent calendar tomorrow – Tuesday, May 21

Please call your state senator’s office immediately, ask for the person who covers the Business and Commerce Committee issues. Tell them you are a constituent and the reasons you are opposed to this bill. Then ask for your senator’s support in defeating this bill when it comes to the senate floor on the intent calendar tomorrow, May 21.

If you’ve called before, call again – there are so many things happening in the capitol as the session is coming to a close that everyone is on information overload.

Please help stop HB 2537

The Bad News:
I want to thank all of you who took a few moments to call and send emails voicing your opposition to the laws to limit and or stop wine shipping.
Although we were able to briefly postpone this, Senator Carona, Whitmire and other Senators voted for the changes and moved it out of committee.  These changes would end our ability to ship wine to you!

Contact your State Senator

and the Texas Lieutenant Governor

HB 2537 passed out of the Senate Business and Commerce Committee on Tuesday, May 14 as substituted by Senator John Carona.  As suspected, the substitute included language requiring wineries to produce or bottle 51% of the wine they ship.  It also requires wineries to maintain complete records of each sale and delivery of wine shipped for at least five years from the date of the sale.

The reasons for our opposition to the committee substitute are:

  • It protects the distribution tier rather than solving a public health safety and welfare issue for the citizens of Texas.
  • It harms existing businesses that are operating within the law.
  • It takes away winery operating rights when no public health, safety or welfare issue exists.  This is a bad precedent.
  • It hinders revenue growth for Texas wineries.
  • It places undue reporting burdens on Texas wineries.

TWGGA Legislative Action Day,

baby & momma at the capitol

Civics lesson for Baby Grape

Dino & I visited the state capitol as part of the 2013 Texas Wine & Grape Grower Association’s  LEGISLATIVE ACTION DAY – March 19, 2013.  We stopped by to visit with the staff of our representative to the house of representatives, Jimmie Don Aycock.  Then in the evening we poured Salado Winery wines at the capitol for interested politicians, staff, lobbyists and their friends.  We met a lot of great people and had a nice time.

According to TWGGA:

Twenty-seven TWGGA members and guests attended the Legislative Briefing before heading to the Capitol to make connections with their legislators and staff. The day ended with over 200 attending the Educational Seminar and Wine Tasting, where 18 wineries and 4 city/educational institutions poured wine and provided information.

The evening event was co-sponsored by Senator Jane Nelson. It was a long day but very beneficial for our industry. Thank you to everyone who worked hard and made many contacts throughout the day.
