New Wine Premieres at Taste of Salado, August 4th

Red Caboose Winery Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot
Red Caboose Winery Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot

Have you bought your tickets to the first ever “Progressive Taste of Salado”?

Because you don’t want to miss out…

For the first time ever, we will be offering this wine, grown in Salado and made by Red Caboose Winery.  This Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend will be poured by the kind folks at The Range Restaurant.  The chef, Dave Hermann will pair it with Ancho-Espresso Rubbed and Smoked Filet of Beef over Smoked Cheddar Mashed, Grilled Veggies.

This wine will be available for sale for $32.95, starting the night of the Progressive Taste of Salado, August 4th, 2009 at Salado Wine Seller.  The grapes for this wine were grown in 2007 and there is only a limited amount available, so don’t miss the premiere.  The grapes from 2008 were blended in a large batch and so it may be 2 years before we have anything this special again!

To purchase tickets, call (214) 293-4579 or click on Progressive Taste of Salado.

Salado Creek Outfitters

home_imgLooking for recreation opportunities in Salado?  Let me tell you where you need to go, Salado Creek Outfitters!

Jeff Warren has plenty of great ideas, and he sent me this note so I could tell you what’s happening now that it’s hot.  I’m too busy right now working in the vineyard to join him on a kayak adventure, but maybe after harvest?  If  you go, be sure to come in and tell me how it went, I’ll be chilling some pinot grigio for you!

From Jeff:

 Breaking News:

  • Salado Creek Outfitters is now open 7 days a week to serve you better.  New hours are 7am-7pm Monday-Saturday and 12pm-5pm on Sundays.
  • Look for our weekly column every Friday in the Killeen Daily Herald sports section.  Each week the column will focus on Exploring the Outdoors.  If you want a copy each week please e-mail me and let me know.  I have attached the first  2 to this e-mail.  This week’s column (July 10th) highlights a special program being run by Bob Maindelle of Holding the Line Guide Service, a Salado based business.  Bob has several kids fishing programs available and one of these is the SKIFF program (Soldiers Kids Involved in Fishing Fun.)  This program enables kids whose parents are deployed to enjoy a free fishing trip courtesy of Bob and the Austin Fly Fishing association.  Bob is also available at very reasonable rates to take your kids fishing.  He is a top notch guide and real pro at catching fish on Stillhouse and Belton.  He can be reached through his website at www.holdingthelineguideservice.com .

 Kayaking:

  • Guided trips are available  The rates vary depending on length of trip and number of participants but start as low as $25 per person for a half day trip.  Guided trips help make your paddling more enjoyable without having to worry about planning and knowledge of the river or lake and shuttle service.  Shuttle service is provided as part of the guide service.
  • We now have 11 boats in our rental fleet.  Rates are $25 for a 1 day rental.  Paddles and life jackets are included.  Shuttle service is available.
  • Join our kayaking club for free. Here’s how- Register for your free Facebook account at www.facebook.com and once you have your account simply search for Cen-Tex paddlers and fill out a request to join our group.  Our next trip is to Inks Lake on July 25th.  We will depart Salado Creek Outfitters at 7am and return sometime that evening.  See Cen-Tex paddlers on Facebook for more details.

Fishing Report:

  • Salado Creek- kids are catching perch on worms fished under bobbers near the I-35 bridge and in Sherrill park under the pecan tree.  Small bass are being caught on minnows or small spinnerbaits and topwater lures.  Catfish are biting minnows and chicken livers.
  • Stillhouse Hollow:  Good numbers of medium size crappie are being caught at night using lights and minnows in 25-30 ft of water along with some good size largemouth bass and white bass. Fishing guide Bob Maindelle (www.holdingthelineguideservice.com) reports some topwater action on whites and largemouths early in the AM and then some success running downriggers with pet spoons later in the day.  Check out his website blog for more details.
  • Belton Lake:  Customers are reporting some hybrids and whites being caught in deeper water (40 ft.) at night on live shad and minnows.  Also reporting some largemouth action with topwaters and spinners at first light in coves adjacent to deep water.  Bob Maindelle reports some success on downriggers for hybrids and whites suspended near concentrations of baitfish.

Screenprinting:

  • We are keeping busy with screenprinting T-Shirts and Uniforms.  Rates start as low as $7.00 per shirt for 1 color designs.   We also do Team Uniforms and have a wide selection in our catalogs.

March 2009 featured wine:  McPherson Viognier

Currently our best-selling dry white wine!  The weather is starting to warm up and once again the search is on for a great Texas white wine, so come on in and try McPherson Viognier.  I recently met Kim McPherson at a wine dinner in Austin where the wine was paired with a Seared Scallop with Vanilla Bean Parsnip Puree & Citrus Salad.  The viognier had the perfect blend of tartness and light flavors to complement the scallop and the citrus was reflected in the flavors of the wine.  From the label:

West Texas is an ideal place to produce classic French Rhone varietal grapes and this is a superb alternative to Chardonnay for those who enjoy complex, full-bodied white wines. This handcrafted wine is dry, soft and rich with aromas of pear, apple, citrus and tropical fruit with a slight hint of oak. We strive to produce the very best wines from select vineyards in West Texas and bring them to you. ALC. 13% BY VOL. PRODUCED AND BOTTLED BY MCPHERSON CELLARS LUBBOCK, TEXAS
