Here are the 2016 chardonnay and sangiovese pickin’ people

The harvest season is already half over and our plans have changed some.  The chardonnay and the sangiovese was harvested July 30th.  The merlot harvest has been pushed back to August 13 and the Cabernet Sauvignon might be ready before Thanksgiving!

Here is the plan as of August 1, 2016.

How to Get There
The vineyard is at 21724 Hill Road, Salado, TX, 76571. Exit 279 off I-35 and we’re just a quarter-mile up Hill Road on the East side of I-35. The vineyard is on the right side of Hill Road. You’ll see the vines from the road!

What to Bring
We will start bright and early at 7 am and go until all the grapes are picked, usually before noon. Wear comfortable, cool clothing. You’ll want to bring a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, and lots of water to start with. We’ll provide everything else you need, including more cold water. If you have a favorite pair of pruners feel free to bring them, but we’ll have plenty for you. We recommend tennis shoes because sometimes there is stinging nettle or a hidden ant mound but you can wear sandals if you like.  Sometimes folks like to wear light cotton gloves to protect their manicure or help prevent wasp stings, but there are no thorns on grape vines. Harvest is family friendly, so feel free to bring the kiddos…Dino has been picking grapes since he was 1!

The After Party
After harvest in the morning, you can join us at the winery to watch grape processing. Our grapes will be de-stemmed and crushed using a machine then the chardonnay will be pressed and red grapes will be prepared for fermentation.

Celebrate Texas Wine Month! Come visit six Central Texas wineries all in one weekend! Your Autumn Afternoon Wine Trail ticket will include 3 wine tastes and a small bite at each winery as well as a souvenir wine glass.

You can start at any of 3 locations – Dancing Bee, The Vineyard at Florence, or Pilot Knob. Choose your ticket based on where you’d like to pick up your trail guide and wine glass. From there, you can choose the order you visit us. You can visit all six wineries in one day or split it between Saturday and Sunday.

The trail runs from 12pm – 6pm Saturday, October 24 and 12 pm – 6 pm Sunday, October 25. This is a self-guided tour. Please be safe and designate a driver! FAQs

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to participate in the trail?

You must be 21 years old to purchase a ticket and taste wine. We will ID and you will show ID at each winery.  For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, we reserve the right to refuse service to those who have consumed enough alcohol.

Where can I pick up my trail guide and souvenir glass?

You can start your trail at one of 3 locations – they are the northernmost, southernmost, and most central locations – Dancing Bee, The Vineyard at Florence, or Pilot Knob. Purchase your ticket based on where you’d like to start. There are a limited number of tickets per starting location.

How long is the wine trail?

The trail is 56 miles from top to bottom.

Can I purchase tickets at the door?

No. Tickets are only available on www.eventbrite.com. Tickets will be available online through 12 pm on Sunday, October 25, 2015

Saturday, August 22nd at 7:00 am, this is the last bunch for the 2015 season, and we welcome you to join us! The vineyard is at 21724 Hill Road, Salado, TX, 76571.

Wear sunscreen, bug spray and a big hat. If you have a favorite pair of pruners then bring them, but we’ll have plenty for you. Dress for heat, but be prepared for anything. I recommend shoes and socks because sometimes there is pigweed that stings or a hidden ant mound and I prefer a little protection for my toesies, but you can wear sandals if you like. Sometimes folks like to wear light cotton gloves, that might help prevent wasp stings, but there are no thorns, so gloves not required.

Families are welcome, the work isn’t hard, just the heat can be a bit discouraging. We will pick until all grapes are harvested, usually around 11 or 12 noon.

Then join us in the afternoon at the winery to witness the last crush of the season.  The cab sauv grapes will be destemmed, crushed and then I’ll add some yeast and let them start the fermentation.  The air conditioning is set to “cold” and this is the best time of the year to come check it all out.

Art Opening Reception for John Davis, a visit from the gnomadic fashion truck, and an extra special wine tasting paired with some great food from Classic Events. A great summer evening filled with art, fashion, wine, food and of course, fun!

John Davis is a resident of Salado and friends with the owners of Salado Winery.  He was chosen to be featured in the winery gallery because his art reflects the eclecticism of the new businesses and artists that are redefining Salado.  John Davis says,

“English is my second language after Art. I can express wordless ideas and places by creating them on a two dimensional surface. The illusion of the multi-dimensional world created on a flat plane is fascinating. Depth with all its mystery sparks my enthusiasm for creating space and filling it with artful shapes.

Artists like Max Earnst , Claes Oldenburg and Dr Suess are inspirational to me as are Silver Age Comic greats like James F. “Jim” Steranko, Jack Kirby and John Buscema . Influenced by Richard Scary, Mad Magazine and Science Fiction my art has evolved into what I like to call visual stream of consciousness.  In creating a piece, I want to fill the canvas with imagery and action to draw viewers in for close inspection that requires more than one visit. Using pencil, pen, brushes, spray paint and collage I encourage viewers to explore and discover personal messages via nostalgic icons of film, Americana or pop culture iconography”.

In addition to meeting the artist, a special food and wine pairing will be offered. The food will be prepared by Classic Catering.  The chef and his staff have carefully crafted a menu to pair with select Salado Winery wines. Tickets are available for $24.95 at www.saladowinery.com.

 

2015 Valentine’s Day Wine & Chocolate Truffle pairing

463884491-2Owner June Ritterbusch will lead you through a chocolate and wine pairing class.  Each couple will be served 6 truffles to share and each person will have 6 different wine samples to sip along with the truffles.  This is meant for lovebirds to share their chocolate and savour their wine.  This class will start promptly at 7 pm and will last 1 hour.
